Yohan Bae, Head of Clinical Development at Kangstem Biotech, explained the osteoarthritis treatment OSCA in a media interview,
He explained, “OSCA, a stem cell-based fusion agent that promotes the differentiation of chondrocytes when stem cells recognize the CAM after administration. Simultaneously, as the CAM creates a favorable environment for the stem cells, these stem cells secrete factors such as TGF-β. These factors stimulate the damaged cartilage and stem cells in the subchondral bone area, leading to cartilage regeneration and healing of structural damage in the subchondral bone. Moreover, OSCA can be administered through a single intra-articular injection into the knee joint without surgery or procedures, reducing the physical and economic burden on patients.”
OSCA is currently undergoing Phase 1 clinical trials, divided into three cohorts: low, medium, and high dosage. Interim evaluations have confirmed excellent safety across all three dosages, while exploratory efficacy assessments(using 100 mm VAS, IKDC, WOMAC, and KOOS) indicated significant improvements in pain and function over time in both the medium and high-dose cohorts.
He added, “Among patients in the medium and high-dose groups, there were cases where pain was completely alleviated and joint function nearly normalized. The significant symptom improvements observed in all medium-dose cohorts align with the imaging assessments(MOCART 2.0, WORMS). We believe this clinical trial demonstrates superior results compared to previously developed formulations and provides clear evidence of structural improvement, thereby validating the proof-of-concept .”
Kangstem Biotech plans to present the results of the Phase 1 trial at the upcoming OARSI(Osteoarthritis Research Society International) conference in April, and has also submitted an abstract to the ISAKOS(International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine) in June.
