  • Marks the Beginning of a Strategic Collaboration, Validating Its Organoid Platform Globally and Opening New Commercial Opportunities

Kangstem Biotech announced on July 16 that it has entered into a Material Transfer and Evaluation Agreement based on its organoid platform with one of the world's top five global pharmaceutical companies.

The agreement marks the first step in a strategic collaboration under which the global pharmaceutical company will evaluate its drug candidates using Kangstem Biotech's organoid platform to validate their clinical efficacy before clinical trials. The company expects the partnership to expand into broader commercialization opportunities, including joint research, research services, and technical transfer.

Under the collaboration, the partner company will apply its drug candidates to Kangstem Biotech's hair follicle organoids to generate evaluation data with greater clinical predictability than conventional animal testing. The approach is expected to shorten drug development timelines and improve clinical success rates.

As New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) continue to gain momentum in the United States and Europe as alternatives to animal testing, Kangstem Biotech's organoid platform has attracted attention for its ability to closely replicate human clinical responses using human tissue-derived models. The platform is also expected to have broad applications in graft materials for the treatment of hair loss and skin diseases.

Professor Kyung-sun Kang of Seoul National University, founder of Kangstem Biotech, said, "Last May, some senior executives responsible for R&D and business development from our global pharmaceutical partner visited Kangstem Biotech's Lab and conducted an exceptionally thorough, a review alike due diligence of not only our proprietary organoid technology but also our manufacturing capabilities. This agreement is only the beginning, and we expect our collaboration to develop into a much broader partnership following the evaluation phase."

He added, "This agreement demonstrates the global competitiveness of Kangstem Biotech's organoid technology and is expected to create additional opportunities for collaboration with other leading global pharmaceutical companies."

The company stated that this agreement is regarded as the first direct partnership between a global top-tier pharmaceutical company and an organoid company, both in Korea and internationally. Kangstem Biotech aims to leverage this milestone to establish itself as a global leader in the organoid market.

Meanwhile, the global hair loss treatment market, currently valued at approximately USD 10 billion, is projected to grow to USD 26.8 billion by 2033, driven by the development of innovative therapies. As a result, global pharmaceutical companies are showing increasing interest in next-generation hair loss treatments based on cell therapy and regenerative medicine.
