Kangstem Biotech announced on the 10th that its patent, “Method for Developing an Atopic Dermatitis Model Using Skin Organoids Derived from Pluripotent Stem Cells,” has been selected as one of the “Top 30 Outstanding Achievements in Health and Medical R&D for 2026” by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the KHIDI(Korea Health Industry Development Institute).
The “Top 30 Outstanding Achievements” is an annual program that selects and recognizes outstanding outcomes generated through government-funded R&D investments.
The selected research was conducted with support from the KFRM(Korean fund for regenerative medicine) technology development program. The project, titled “Development of Advanced Artificial Skin Manufacturing Technology and Skin Regeneration Therapy Based on Immune-Regulating 3D Human Skin Organoids,” was led by Professor Kyung-sun Kang of Seoul National University, founder of Kangstem Biotech, who served as the principal investigator.
The technology was originally developed by Seoul National University and secured by Kangstem Biotech through a technology transfer agreement. The company currently holds the related patents and is conducting R&D activities for commercialization.
The selection represents official recognition by government institutions of the technology’s originality, advancement, innovation, and industrial potential. It further demonstrates the competitiveness of Kangstem Biotech’s skin organoid-based platform technology as a next-generation preclinical evaluation platform and a key technology in the regenerative medicine field.
A Kangstem Biotech representative stated, “The skin organoid-based atopic dermatitis model selected as an outstanding achievement has been continuously advanced through our own R&D efforts since acquiring the technology from Seoul National University. Through these efforts, our skin organoid platform, which reproduces conditions similar to those observed in actual atopic dermatitis, has already entered in the commercialization stage.”
The representative added, “Organoid-based disease modeling platforms are expected to become an innovative business model that creates new value in drug development and regenerative medicine market.”
