Evaluation of skin organoid efficacy with LG Electronics

Kangstem Biotech collaborated with LG Electronics to evaluate the efficacy of beauty devices using skin organoid models. The company introduced a new, reliable evaluation method by overcoming the limitations of existing skin organoid models, with the research being presented at the Korean Society of Cosmetology conference through the P&K Skin Clinical Research Center.
LG Electronics sought to evaluate the efficacy of Kangstem Biotech's skin organoids in order to secure scientific evidence regarding the mechanisms behind the efficacy of beauty devices. The skin organoid model was used to assess the effects of beauty devices on increasing the permeability of substances and their whitening effects. Notably, Kangstem Biotech overcame the limitations of previous models by using skin tissue cultured from organoids, rather than analyzing human skin samples, which is accurate but impractical. By directly observing changes in skin tissue and the gene and protein expression within cells, it became possible to analyze the mechanisms and effects of beauty devices.
Furthermore, traditional skin organoid models are either completely submerged in culture solution or structured as cysts with inverted epidermal and dermal layers, preventing direct evaluation of contact with the epidermal layer. However, Kangstem Biotech’s skin organoids employ an air-liquid interface culture method, where the epidermal layer is exposed to air and the dermal layer is submerged in the culture solution, effectively mimicking real skin conditions. This method not only facilitates direct contact with the epidermal layer but also enables the evaluation of beauty devices of various sizes.
The R&D Director at Kangstem Biotech stated, “Our skin organoid-based efficacy evaluation addresses the weaknesses of existing skin models and evaluation methods, allowing us to assess the interaction between skin tissue and beauty devices in a real skin environment. This has allowed us to confirm the excellent function of LG Electronics' beauty devices.” He added, “Starting with this preliminary test, both companies plan to move forward with standardization efforts to establish skin organoid manufacturing and evaluation methods tailored to beauty devices.”
Meanwhile, Kangstem Biotech, in collaboration with Professor Kang Kyung-sun’s research team at Seoul National University, has created the world’s first skin organoids with the same structure and function as real human skin. The company has also signed a contract with P&K Skin Clinical Research Center for cosmetics efficacy evaluation services based on this technology. Kangstem Biotech is gradually establishing efficacy evaluation methods for wrinkle reduction, skin barrier improvement, anti-aging, and whitening in cosmetics and is accelerating the commercialization of skin organoids, including evaluations of effective substances for hair follicles and product development.
